THE HIGH TATRA MOUNTAINS, REGAL AND MIGHTY

Marching through Eastern Europe like a procession of snow-crowned  queens, the majestic peaks of the mighty Carpathian range. For roughly fifteen hundred kilometres they parade, traversing such nations as Austria, Romania, Serbia and the Ukraine. Glorious as they are, majestic in their own regal right, the royal cities of Vienna, Krakow and Bratislava bend their knees in homage to the passing giants.

The continent’s largest range of mountains, the Carpathians are home to an astonishing array of wildlife, as well as virgin forests and no fewer than thirty peaks at least two and a half thousand metres in height. The brown bear roams her dense woodlands. So, too, the imperial eagle, lynx, chamois goat and wolf.

And, of course, the mountains also play host to countless myths and legends, being the fabled home of the greatest villain of them all, Count Dracula.

Nowhere are these ancient colossi more impressive than on the borderlands of Poland and Slovakia, where they are known as the High Tatra Mountains. Most of the ski and snowboard action takes place on the mountains’ lower slopes, although high alpine pistes are available at the crest of the formidable Kasprowy Wierch.
